How to Cancel Xbox Game Pass (2026) — Web, Console and App
Game Pass is cancelled from your Microsoft account rather than from the Xbox app, and cancelling means turning off recurring billing. You keep access until the current period ends.
Nothing you own is affected. Installed Game Pass titles stop launching when the membership lapses, but saves stay in the cloud and any game you bought outright continues to work normally.
Cancelling stops the renewal but does not end the membership immediately — you keep playing until the paid period runs out. Your saves are never deleted, even after it lapses.
Cancel Xbox Game Pass step by step
- Open account.microsoft.com/services and sign in.
- Find Game Pass or Game Pass Ultimate, then select Manage.
- Choose Turn off recurring billing, or Cancel subscription if offered.
- Confirm, and check that the page now shows an expiry date.
- Microsoft bills Game Pass directly, so use the website above.
- If you subscribed through the App Store, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions and cancel there.
- If billed by Microsoft, use the website above.
- If you subscribed through Google Play, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, and cancel there.
Common questions
Do I lose my save files?
No. Saves stay in the cloud and on your console, and are still there if you resubscribe or buy the game later. This is the most common worry and the answer is reassuring.
Can I keep playing games I installed?
No. Game Pass titles check for an active membership and stop launching when it lapses, even though the files remain installed.
What happens to games I bought at the Game Pass discount?
You keep them permanently. The member discount applies to a normal purchase, so it is unaffected by cancelling.
I converted Xbox Live Gold into Ultimate. What happens to that time?
Converted time is already on your account as Ultimate. Turning off recurring billing keeps every day of it — you simply are not charged when it ends.
Can I get a refund?
Often yes, and by entitlement rather than goodwill. Microsoft refunds within 30 days of the initial purchase, or before the first recurring charge if that comes sooner. Separately, you are entitled to a refund of your most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days of it — but only once per Microsoft account per subscription, so it is worth saving for a renewal you genuinely did not want. Immediate cancellation with a prorated refund exists only in certain countries, so do not count on it.
When does access actually stop?
At the end of the period you have already paid for. The account page shows the exact expiry date once recurring billing is off.
What happens to online multiplayer on console?
Ultimate includes online multiplayer, so console multiplayer in paid games stops when it lapses. Free-to-play titles are unaffected.
Does this cancel my Microsoft 365 or other subscriptions?
No. Each subscription on the Services page is managed separately, so cancelling Game Pass leaves the rest running.
Will my achievements and Gamerscore be affected?
No. Achievements are permanent and tied to your account, not the subscription.
Can I rejoin later at the same price?
You can rejoin any time at the current price. Game Pass has increased several times, and previously discounted conversion routes have closed, so the old rate is not guaranteed.
Game Pass is easy to cancel. That is not why people keep paying for it.
