How to Cancel HBO Max (2026) — Web, App and Provider Billing
HBO Max is cancelled from the account page in a browser, and access runs to the end of the period you have paid for.
If you are looking for Max, this is the same service. It was renamed Max in 2023 and renamed back to HBO Max in July 2025, and max.com now redirects to hbomax.com. Nothing about your account or your billing changed with it.
The frequent obstacle is third-party billing. HBO Max was widely distributed through cable and mobile providers, and those subscriptions are invisible to HBO Max's own cancellation flow.
If you got HBO Max through a cable, broadband or mobile provider, HBO Max cannot cancel it. The account page names your billing provider — that is who you have to contact.
Cancel HBO Max step by step
- Open hbomax.com/account in a browser and sign in — max.com still redirects there.
- Select Subscription, then Manage Subscription.
- Choose Cancel Subscription and confirm.
- Check the page shows an end date, and look for the confirmation email.
- If you subscribed in the app, Apple bills you.
- Open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions.
- Tap HBO Max, then Cancel Subscription.
- If billed through Google Play, cancel there.
- Play Store, profile icon, Payments and subscriptions.

Common questions
I cannot find a cancel option — why?
Your subscription is billed by someone else: Apple, Google, Amazon Channels, or a cable or mobile provider. The account page names them under Subscription.
Do I get a refund?
HBO Max does not refund partial periods, so as a rule you keep access until the end of the term you paid for. If you are in the EU and it is less than 14 days since you signed up, you have more leverage than that: since a July 2026 EU Court of Justice ruling, streaming counts as a digital service, so starting to watch no longer waives your cooling-off right. You can withdraw within 14 days, pay only for the portion you actually used, and get the rest back. It is recent, so expect to have to name the right of withdrawal when you ask.
What happens to my downloads?
They stop playing when the subscription ends and are removed from the device.
Will my watchlist and profiles be kept?
They stay with the account for a period, so resubscribing soon restores them.
I have an annual plan. Can I cancel early?
You can stop it renewing, but you keep access for the rest of the year already paid for and there is no refund for unused months.
When does access end?
At the end of the current billing period. The exact date appears once the cancellation is confirmed.
Does cancelling delete my account?
No. The account and any purchases remain; only the streaming subscription stops.
Why am I still being charged?
Almost always a second subscription — commonly one through Apple or Google alongside a direct one, or a provider bundle nobody touched.
What about the ad-free tier — do I keep it until the end?
Yes. Whatever tier you paid for runs to the end of the period at that tier.
Can I resubscribe at my old price?
No. Returning users pay the current rate, and HBO Max has changed both its name and its pricing more than once.
The hardest subscriptions to cancel are the ones you did not buy directly.
If HBO Max turned out to be billed by a mobile or cable provider, you have hit the awkward case: it never appears as its own line, the streaming service itself cannot stop it, and it survives every audit of your statement.
