How to Cancel Dropbox (2026) — And Keep Your Files
Dropbox downgrades to a 2GB free plan rather than closing your account, and the change takes effect at the end of the paid period.
2GB is small enough that most paying customers are well over it. Download or move what you need before the downgrade lands, or syncing will stop and the account will be restricted.
The free tier is only 2GB — far smaller than iCloud or Google. If you are over it after downgrading, Dropbox stops syncing and eventually restricts the account, so move files out first.
Cancel Dropbox step by step
- Open dropbox.com/account/billing and sign in.
- Select Cancel plan, near the plan details.
- Work past the retention offers and confirm.
- Check the page shows the downgrade date.
- If you subscribed in the app, Apple bills you.
- Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Dropbox, Cancel Subscription.
- If billed via Google Play, cancel there.
- Play Store, profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, Dropbox, Cancel.
Common questions
Will my files be deleted?
Not straight away, but over 2GB the account becomes restricted: syncing stops and you cannot add files. Dropbox may eventually delete content on long-restricted accounts, so download first.
Do I get a refund?
Usually not — Dropbox says payments are not refundable in most cases. There is one real exception, and it is the one worth knowing in Europe: if you live in the EU, UK or Turkey you can get a refund by cancelling a Plus, Family, Professional or Essentials plan within 14 days of the purchase. Outside that window, or outside those regions, expect to keep the access rather than the money. If Apple or Google billed you, their refund policies apply instead of this one.
How do I get my files out?
Download folders from the web interface, or keep the desktop app running with files marked as local until the copy is complete. Large libraries take a long time — start early.
What happens to shared folders?
You remain a member of folders shared with you, but the storage they consume counts against your 2GB. Large shared folders alone can put you over.
When does the downgrade happen?
At the end of the current billing period, not immediately.
What happens to file version history?
Extended version history is a paid feature and drops back to the free tier's shorter window, so older versions become unrecoverable.
Does cancelling delete my account?
No. The account survives on the free plan. Deleting it is a separate action.
What about Dropbox Passwords or Vault?
Paid features stop working. Export any passwords stored there before downgrading.
Can I switch to a cheaper plan instead?
Yes, and it is offered during cancellation. Moving from Professional to Plus keeps far more than 2GB.
If I resubscribe, do restricted files come back?
Yes, access is restored once you are back over the storage threshold, provided nothing was deleted in the meantime.
Cloud storage is the subscription most likely to outlive its reason.
People sign up for one project, one move, one full phone — and then keep paying for years after the need has gone, because cancelling means dealing with the files and dealing with the files is never today's job.
Subzy will not move your files, but it will make sure the charge is a decision you make on purpose rather than one you discover. A warning before every renewal, and one total for everything.
