How to Cancel Microsoft 365 (2026) — Word, Excel and OneDrive
Microsoft 365 is cancelled from the Services page of your Microsoft account, and unusually you may get a partial refund for unused time.
Afterwards the Office apps do not vanish — they drop into a read-only mode where you can open and print documents but not edit them, and OneDrive falls back to 5GB.
Microsoft’s prorated refund is real but narrow: it applies only if you cancel within 7 days of the charge, and full prorating is limited to certain countries. Outside that window you keep access to the end of the term like everywhere else.
Cancel Microsoft 365 step by step
- Open account.microsoft.com/services and sign in.
- Find Microsoft 365 and select Manage.
- Choose Cancel subscription, or Turn off recurring billing to let it run out instead.
- Confirm and check for the email.
- If you subscribed in an Office app, Apple bills you.
- Settings, your name, Subscriptions, Microsoft 365, Cancel Subscription.
- If billed via Google Play, cancel there.
- Play Store, profile icon, Payments and subscriptions, Subscriptions, Microsoft 365, Cancel.
Common questions
Do I get a refund?
Only in a narrow case. Microsoft offers a prorated credit or refund if you cancel within 7 days of the subscription starting or renewing. Beyond that, prorated refunds are limited to specific countries — Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Israel, Korea, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Turkey among them — under local consumer law. The cancellation screen states whether yours qualifies.
Can I still use Word and Excel afterwards?
In read-only mode. You can open, view and print existing documents but not create or edit them. The free web versions of Office remain fully usable.
What happens to my OneDrive files?
Storage drops to 5GB. Over that, the account becomes read-only after a grace period and Microsoft may eventually delete files, so download anything important first.
What is the difference between cancelling and turning off recurring billing?
Cancelling can end it early with a refund. Turning off recurring billing keeps access to the end of the term you already paid for, with no refund.
Does this affect my Microsoft account or email?
No. Outlook.com email, your account and any purchases stay. Only the 365 subscription ends.
What happens to family members on my plan?
Everyone sharing the family subscription loses their benefits and storage when it ends.
Do I lose my Office activation on all devices?
Yes, the licence covers all your installs and lapses on all of them together.
What about Microsoft Defender and the other extras?
The bundled extras — Defender, Editor, Clipchamp features and the Skype minutes — end with the subscription.
When does access stop?
Either immediately if a refund applies, or at the end of the term if you turned off renewal or fall outside the refund window. The confirmation screen states which.
Can I switch to a cheaper Personal plan instead?
Yes, and moving from Family to Personal is offered during the flow — usually cheaper than cancelling and resubscribing later.
Microsoft refunds unused time. Almost nothing else does.
That is worth noticing, because it means the cost of cancelling late here is unusually low — and the cost of cancelling late everywhere else is unusually high by comparison. Most services simply keep the money.
