How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus (2026) — Web and Mobile

ChatGPT Plus is cancelled from the settings menu inside ChatGPT itself, and you keep Plus features until the end of the period you have paid for.

Cancelling does not touch your data. Conversations, saved memories and custom GPTs remain on the account — you simply return to the free tier's models and limits.

Your chat history is not deleted when you cancel — it stays on the free tier. What you lose is model access, higher limits and any GPTs you built that rely on Plus features.

Common questions

Do I lose my chat history?

No. Conversations stay on your account and remain readable on the free tier.

What happens to custom GPTs I made?

They stay in your account, but building and using some of them requires Plus, so they may become unavailable until you resubscribe.

Do I get a refund?

Partial months are not refunded as a rule, but there are two windows worth knowing. OpenAI will refund an accidental purchase if you ask within 14 days of the charge. And if you are in the EU, UK or Turkey you have a statutory 14-day right to withdraw and get a prorated refund for any reason at all — you do not have to justify it. Both are requested through the help centre, signed in with the account that was charged.

When does Plus actually end?

At the end of the current billing period. The settings page shows the date.

Why can I not find the cancel option in the app?

Because Apple or Google bills you. In that case the app cannot cancel it — only Settings on the device can.

Does cancelling delete my account?

No. Only the subscription ends; deleting the account is separate and permanent.

What do I actually lose?

Access to the newer models, higher message limits, faster responses at busy times, and Plus-only features. The free tier continues with lower limits.

What happens to memories and custom instructions?

They stay saved on the account and apply again if you resubscribe.

Can I switch to a different plan instead?

Yes, and downgrading between paid tiers is offered in the same billing portal if a cheaper plan suits.

Will I be charged again after cancelling?

No, provided the billing portal shows the plan ending on a date. A second subscription through Apple or Google is the usual cause of an unexpected charge.

Tools bought in a busy week are the ones still billing a year later.

Software subscriptions get taken out during a project and survive long past it, because they are cheap enough individually not to trigger a review and useful enough occasionally to feel justified.

Subzy shows what the whole set costs per year rather than each one per month, which is the framing that actually prompts a decision. Free for five, no card, no bank login.
